The Church is because God is!

Devotions Week 29:

The Christian life is not a way “out,” but a way “through” life. ~Billy Graham

The early Christian Church. He appointed twelve – designating them apostles – that they may be with Him and that He might send them out to preach… “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent me.” Mark 3:14 &
John 17:20-21
(read Mark 3:13-15
& John 17:20-26)
To receive the Word of God. “For I gave them the words You gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from You, and they believed that You sent me.” John 17:8
(read 17:6-10)
To preach the message of reconciliation. Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come… We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians
5:17, 20
(read 5:16-21)
The Church is a Spirit-filled community. Be careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Ephesians 5:15-17
(read 5:15-20)
The Church and spiritual gifts. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
(read 12:1-11)
The Church, one body but many parts. The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many they form one body, so it is with Christ… Now you are the body of Christ, and each one is part of it. 1 Corinthians
12:12, 27
(read 12:12-31)
The Church in the last days. “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Acts 2:17-21

“The Church’s one Foundation” – by S.J. Stone
The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is His new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.
Elect from every nation yet one over all the earth,
Her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth:
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses with every grace endued.
Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder, her heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore,
Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,
And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
Yet she on earth has union with God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally.
